IFAC's 30th Anniversary


IFAC was established in 1977 as the global federation for the accountancy profession. Its founding mission, which guides IFAC’s work today, is to serve the public interest by developing high quality international standards, promoting their adoption and use, and contributing to the profession’s growth and development around the world.


World Accountancy Week

IFAC and its members and associates around the globe celebrated World Accountancy Week on December 2-8, 2007.

  • IFAC World Accountancy Forum

    On December 4, 2007, IFAC hosted a World Accountancy Forum in New York City on Government, the Accountancy Profession and the Public Trust: Current Initiatives and Future Challenges. Speakers from government, public policy organizations, regulators, standard setters, accounting firms, as well as IFAC’s leadership discussed the interconnected roles of government and the accountancy profession in promoting strong financial reporting and sound corporate governance. Video recordings of the event are available.
  • Global Events and Activities

    IFAC’s member organizations worldwide planned special events during the week and throughout 2007, including anniversary forums, press conferences, awards programs, and receptions.

Global Leadership Survey

During World Accountancy Week, IFAC released the results of its first annual Global Leadership Survey of the Presidents and Chief Executives of its members, associates, and regional accountancy bodies. The survey results highlight issues that the accountancy profession will be addressing in the coming year, as well as national and regional perspectives on economic growth and the profession’s role in contributing to that growth. 115 IFAC member bodies and associates from 91 countries, as well as six regional accountancy bodies, participated in the survey.

IFAC History

As part of its 30th anniversary activities, IFAC has published a history of the organization, IFAC: 30 Years of Progress – Encouraging Quality and Building Trust, which explores the role of member bodies and others in IFAC’s growth and the issues that impacted its development.

2007 IFAC Council Seminar

During the November 2007 IFAC Council meeting in Mexico City, an anniversary seminary was held on The Financial Reporting Environment in the 21st Century. Presentations focused on such topics as business reporting models of the future, the state of public sector financial reporting, and effective regulation.
